Robert Leger was born in Les Cayes, Haiti. Mexico was his home for 11 years where he studied medicine at the Universidad Nacional Autonomy de Mexico and graduated as a General Surgeon from Hospital Juarez, Mexico. He returned to his country in 1981 to reach his dream : “Go back to Haiti and offer his services so greatly needed in his community”.

Robert was Head of The Department of Surgery of Hospital Immaculée Conception des Cayes for 27 years doing general surgery . During many years he was the only surgeon in this institution saving people’s lives with the minimum equipment available and helped improve conditions in this department. He also was President of the Red Cross in Les Cayes and head of the blood bank. Member of the AMH (Haitian Medical Association), of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists and also a member of the Chamber of Commerce of the South he has served on the boards of several organizations and as a consultant for different institutions in Les Cayes

Due to health issues, Dr. Robert Leger, retired from the General Hospital in 2008 after 27 years of service and since then continues full time to do Family Medicine in his private practice. Although a retired surgeon, he still offers his services to the same hospital he worked for so many years when required. His services were very much needed after the Earthquake where he put aside his private work to dedicate days performing surgery to the many wounded arriving from Port-au-Prince and affected areas seeking help. The only surgeon in Les Cayes the first 48 hours after the earthquake he operated, organized, looked for material and equipment needed and coordinated the volunteer efforts when groups of surgeons from different part of the world came to assist.

Robert’s commitment to progress with desire to improve communities and change people’s living conditions, has made him a very passionate Rotarian. What Rotary has done in his own country and is doing around the world, has made him see Rotary as a tool for change and development. Nothing is impossible for ROTARY.

Robert joined Rotary Club des Cayes in 1983 and was elected President of his Club for two terms. During his 34 years as a Rotarian, he has held all the posts in his club.
